Novak Djokovic shocked everyone when asked to speak his Chinese fans
Daily Mail reports that Novak Djokovic stunned fans and the press alike by responding to a reporter's question in fluent Mandarin. The 24-time Grand Slam champion was speaking at a press conference during the United Cup in Perth, when the eye-opening incident occurred after Serbia had defeated China to progress to the quarter finals.
A Chinese reporter asked the Serb ace if he could say "Happy New Year" in Chinese and got more than she bargained for.
To the astonishment of all present, Djokovic not only repeated the phrase, but also threw in some thoughts of his own. "How are you?" he said. "Thank you for your support. I love you, China, my good friend!"
Djokovic is a fan of learning languages and can speak 10 others besides Serbian: English, French, Mandarin, German, Italian, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Portuguese, and Japanese.
Tennis fans loved the moment and took to social media to talk about it.
"Master of cross culture communication," wrote one fan on X. "I genuinely think he is a genius!" replied another. "He is not from this planet," wrote a third.
Djokovic surprised Chinese tennis fans in 2018 after his triumph in the Shanghai Masters by giving his winner's speech in fluent Mandarin.
The World No.1 is coming off another incredible season in which he won three of the four grand slams. He is currently the favorite to win his 11th title at the Australian Open this year.
