An Open Letter to Archbishop Timothy Dolan

Dear Archbishop Dolan,
Last week you accepted the resignation of Daniel Avila, who had served as policy adviser for marriage and family to the U.S. bishops' Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage. His recent column in the Boston Pilot suggesting that being lesbian or gay is the result of satanic influence proved an indefensible embarrassment.

That our bishops hired an individual with such extreme views to help influence the public policy of a diverse nation is highly problematic. It marginalizes Catholics in public debate and trivializes our proud history of representing those most excluded from our country’s aspiration of liberty and justice for all. It pushes our Church to the fringes of moral relevance.

Even more significant is the pastoral damage done by this incident, and the many others like it in recent months. Catholic officials have sought to ban access to subsidized housing for lesbian and gay elders, terminated foster care and adoption programs rather than place children with trained, certified, loving same-sex couples, fired gay and lesbian people from their jobs for reasons that have nothing to do with professional performance, and banned our children from Catholic schools. Bishops have led the fight against access to equal benefit under the law for same-sex couples in committed relationships. Many of these battles have been brought to the pulpit, with homilies, video messages, and bulletin inserts that make us and our families feel attacked in the very place that should provide sanctuary for all. These actions contribute to the continued flood of members out of our Church, and to diminishing commitment among those who remain.

If the US Catholic bishops wish to have a credible, respected voice in ministering to people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender you need to begin to listen to us. If the bishops want to maintain any credibility in the public conversation about issues of justice for our community, you need to begin a conversation with us first. I urge you to immediately establish a process to meet with lesbian, gay, bisexual (LGBT) Catholics, our parents, siblings, grandparents, and children, the sisters and priests who minister with us, and theologians wrestling with questions that are important to our community and our Church. We can provide both pastoral and political insight rooted in the faith we hold dear.

One bright spot in recent history has been the Michigan Catholic Conference’s withdrawal of support for an anti-bullying bill that would have provided sweeping exemptions if perpetrators cited moral or religious motivation for their actions. This stance indicates one agreement from which we can begin a conversation: there is no justification for attacking another person. I believe that ending violence against those who are or who are perceived to be gay or transgender is a goal we share, and that by coming together on this issue the US Catholic bishops, LGBT Catholics and those who love them could make a significant positive change in the lives of countless people who are victims of violent prejudice.

I am happy to assist in identifying individuals who would be willing to serve on a Pastoral and Policy Advisory Committee, or to engage in a series of conversations with you or other representatives of the Conference. Such engagement would surely have profound ramifications for many people, families, our nation, and our Church. I look forward to your response.

Many of us in the gay community are waiting with baited breath for our “boo” Anderson Cooper to publicly acknowledge what we have all known for years. We need to hear the words “I’m Gay” come out of his pretty little mouth. Hell, some of us want him describe his sexual activities in the style of a Jackie Collins novel. Let’s be clear, I’m not one of those people (yeah, right,) but I know many of you sluts are. Though he doesn’t proclaim his “gayness” out loud; I can tell you that being in his studio audience was one of the gayest experiences I’ve had in a while.

While waiting with my friend, writer Matthew Rettenmund to enter into the studio, we were treated to a brief scene of heavy petting provided by two studs who obviously met at the gym before attending. Before any hardcore sex took place, we were all ushered into the absolutely beautiful “Anderson” studio, where music from what must have been from Anderson’s personal playlist was blaring from the speakers. We were treated to the sounds of Britney, LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem” and other pulsating beats. All that was missing was strobe lights, go-go dancers and the smell of poppers.

A painful audience warm-up was next on the agenda by a very unfunny comedian who seemed obsessed with jokes about death. (I don’t know about you, but discussing death always makes me want to party!) This guy obviously ran out of “material” after five minutes as he encouraged audience members to go onstage and sing. Matt and I sat through a rendition of The National Anthem that had us wishing Roseanne Barr was in the building to take over the vocals. After our country was butchered worse than Michele Bachmann reciting the Constitution, it was time for the alleged comedian to ask the audience who was single and who wasn’t. Was this the topic of the show? No, but I guess he had to pull something out of his ass before he got booed off the stage. I was too shy to raise my hand, but a cute little twink a few rows in front of us had NO shame. He was asked why he was single and he said “because I haven’t found Mr. Right.” Mr. “Warm-Up Man” then asked if any guys wanted to “apply” to be the man of his dreams. The guy stopped him, saying that “Mr. Right is backstage.” Yes she did!! She totally let the entire Time Warner Center know that Anderson was HIS man! The audience started to applaud wildly! Not knowing exactly what to do, Mr. “Laugh-A Minute” smiled nicely and quickly changed the subject!

Moments later, America’s boyfriend finally took the stage. I was taken by just how small he is in real life. He seemed to have a slight limp when he walked, which naturally led me to question if this is his normal gait or if he was fisted the night before. At any rate, it was now ShowTime. I am forbidden from discussing the topic of the show I attended as everyone had to sign an agreement to not say a word. Since I’m afraid Anderson may want the last 5 dollars in my savings account, I’ll only say that the topic was one of those Oprah-esque feel good stories. I suppose if I had any feelings left, I would have liked it. Since I don’t, I found the topic had the potential to induce vomiting. In all honesty, I think Anderson also shared my sentiments. He didn't seem very interested in the subject matter and I felt his questions were forced. He wasn't very spontaneous and seemed to be a control freak, keeping his focus on the writing and camera angles. In fact, one of my favorite moments happened when Anderson flipped the "bitch switch" on after a camera man was doing a wide shot instead of a close up during a tease. Anderson's face suddenly changed as rage overcame his body. There were NO giggles to be found and his voice dropped to scold the camera man. He also was VERY impatient when a producer put the wrong write-up in the teleprompter. He started to yell "come on, let's go" over and over. I thought he was about to become Satanic and start cursing. Matt commented that he thought at one point he yelled “What, are you down there talking to your MOTHERS?!?” I didn’t hear this because I was focused on the revelation that he is likely a VERY bossy bottom! I would not be surprised if a few folks were fired after the taping!

At the very end of the taping, Anderson took questions from members of the studio audience. To close the day, an adorable blond gay guy with a quasi-Mohawk asked Anderson if he “remembered him.” Anderson immediately knew who he was saying “Oh yeah, you’re the guy that asked me for tickets at the gym!” Matt and I immediately looked at each other as this was getting a bit juicy! Anderson continued by saying “I almost didn’t recognize you as your hair was flat in the showers!” The young man responded “Yeah, my friend thought it was inappropriate that I asked you for a ticket when you were just wearing a towel.” With that, Anderson thanked the cutie and shortly after said goodbye to us.

I had a gay-ole-time visiting the set of “Anderson.” I sincerely hope it finds a large audience and that my “boyfriend-in-my-head” will be able to relax, enjoy his success and most importantly be 100% comfortable with who he is!

Kenneth,

I'm writing to you about the potential loss of a longtime Greenwich Village bar, Pieces. I own Pieces and want to fill you in on the past 6 weeks of drama that has surrounded my little bar. My particular story is interesting, but it also illustrates why NYC nightlife is a pale shadow of its former self.

Pieces has been at 8 Christopher St. since 1993. The building is falling apart, and the landlord has said that at the end of my current lease extension they will require us to vacate in order to gut the building and rebuild. They have made it clear that Pieces is not welcome back after.

After several failed deals, I finally secured a spot on W. 8th St., directly across 6th Ave. and literally 325' from my current location. With a handshake deal in place, I began negotiations with the neighbors as the first step in getting a liquor license is "notifying" the community board. In the past few years, this has changed from a true notification to a negotiation where you agree to many restrictions on your business operations in exchange for their not opposing you. Where the boards once had no real power, recent political pressure has made the State Liquor Authority increasingly more likely to follow their recommendations.

I went through extensive and exhaustive negotiations with the block association to no avail. They did not want a bar on their block, and no concessions I could make would placate them. They were afraid of noise, however there was also an undercurrent of homophobia, as well--pretty shocking for Greenwich Village. The community boards like for you to work things out with your neighbors prior to appearing before them, so I knew I was in a bit of trouble.

The liquor committee of the community board ended up recommending a denial of my license due to the opposition of the block association even though I had unprecedented support from the broader community, including people from the block. See here.

The committee is only a recommendation to the full board, however, and I still had one shot left at the full board. Overturning a committee recommendation is very difficult, but I had nothing to lose. I ended up winning. See here.

This Monday, on my way to the lease signing with the landlord after thousands of dollars of legal fees negotiating the lease and hundreds of hours invested in organizing to get community board approval, I got a call that the deal was "on hold". Canceling a deal at that point is unprecedented. Apparently, the residential tenants in the building and the superintendent marshaled a campaign of hate and homophobia which influenced the landlord to back out. See here.

Anyway, that is where things stand now. I don't know what, if any, interest this might hold for you, but if a small, quiet, neighborhood bar like Pieces can't move 300' away after agreeing to restricted hours, professional soundproofing, and other major concessions, it's no wonder that the City That Never Sleeps is becoming quiet and homogenized.

Buenos Diaz: A Conversation With Beantown Cuban Johnny Diaz (continued)

CC: This book masterfully focuses on an "aging" gay man and the loneliness he feels at trying to preserve his youth while attempting to find love in a youth-obsessed culture. As a single (wink) gay man in my mid-30s I can certainly relate. What kind of response have you gotten from readers who often feel they don't "fit in?"
JD: From what I have been hearing so far, a lot of gay men in their mid-30s and older are relating to my main character Gabriel who suddenly begins to realize that he is finally that older guy in the bar or club among a sea of twinks and early 30-somethings. That’s one of the reasons why I wanted to write the book -- how does an aging gay man fit in today’s youth-obsessed gay culture. Where do we go? Are we relegated to Bingo night?

CC: I like Bingo night… Relationships between your gay characters and their families are a common thread in your books. How much of a role does the relationship between you and your parents play in your writing?
JD: My family and friends fuel my novels. They are my literary muses. With "Boston Boys Club" and "Miami Manhunt," the themes were mostly centered around friendship and finding your place in a new city. With "Beantown Cubans" and now "Take the Lead," I wanted to delve into deeper themes such as our relationships with our mothers and fathers and how they influence and affect our decisions in our private lives especially when we think we meet that special someone.

CC: At the core of "Take The Lead" is the story of "Gabriel" dealing with his father's diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease. You write very explicitly about the challenges of living with a chronic illness and how it feels to be a loved one of someone who is suffering. What was your inspiration to tell this story?
JD: My father has Parkinson’s disease and I knew that in my fourth book, I wanted to explore that. Over the past 10 years, I have seen my dad slowly weaken from the condition as it has robbed him of the little everyday things that we may all take for granted such as driving, buttoning your shirt, picking up a spoon or a fork. When I learned of a special dance class for people with Parkinson’s in Boston where I wrote an article on for The Boston Globe, I realized I had a way of telling the story of how a degenerative disease can affect a loved one and the challenges of feeling so powerless to help that loved one. My hope is to raise some awareness on the disease and the impact it has on the patient and the family.

CC: One of your "trademarks" in your books is to have cameo appearances by characters in previous novels. "Tommy Perez," the sexy Cuban-American newspaper writer who is present in all your previous work makes a significant appearance in "Take The Lead." How much of Johnny is in "Tommy?"
JD: I have seen other authors do that, particularly the late E. Lynn Harris. By having previous characters pop up in small scenes in new books, the readers get an update of what that character has been up to. Tommy is pretty close to who I am. He has my professional resume and background and all my little quirks (Diet Coke obsession, mild OCD, etc.). Except he’s 10 pounds thinner and five years younger. I believe most authors have one character who serves as an alter personality.

CC: I agree. Though I’m not an author, I do have an alter personality. She’s a big drag queen named Sharkeetha. Anyway… I have read all your books and find that they all read like really good scripts. Do you have any specific writing “rituals?”
JD: I approach each chapter as a long newspaper features article with at least two to three scenes to help the story flow along. On average, each chapter is anywhere between 2,000 to 3,000 words. That’s the formula I use. I also tend to write when I can, on the weekends, at night, during lunch at work. I have a notepad where I jot down scenes, details and dialogue wherever I go. You never know when inspiration strikes.

CC: I’m inspired right now, sexy man… Oh..um… You have given a positive voice to gay Latinos and exposed us to the vibrant Cuban culture. As a result, I’ve bought all of Celia Cruz’s CDs. You often describe Cuban cuisine in your writing. What is your favorite Cuban meal?
JD: I am a sucker for a grilled chicken breast sandwich on toasted Cuban bread with lettuce, tomatoes and mayo with a side of plantains and a mamey shake. Yum!

CC: I have no idea who Mamey is, but I’m sure her shake is wonderful. In your other life, you write about television and other media for The Boston Globe. As a veteran of early reality television from being on "The Real World: Miami," how do you think reality television has changed?
JD: Reality TV has become more dramatic, in-your-face to get ratings and I think producers are running out of ways to stand out from the crowd. With the fragmentation of media and the ever-expanding cable and Internet universes, we have so many options for programming. That makes it more difficult for network reality shows to get our attention. The standard reality shows, the pioneering ones such as "The Real World" or even "Survivor," aren’t water cooler buzz. Instead of character studies, the shows are more about “what will you watch for a few episodes?”

CC: I agree. I think midgets will be next … Oh, but we already have that. I shudder to think what will be next. Expanding on media, you recently signed a deal with Open Road Integrated Media which optioned your three previous books for television, movies, a digital media. Are there any projects that you can talk about in the works now? What do you hope will come from this deal??
JD: It’s still too early in the process. I am hoping that one of the titles evolves into another platform, whether that it’s an Internet series or a TV one.

CC: Sounds great!! Any book signings coming up? What is in the works for The Beantown Cuban at this time?
JD: I have a reading at Outwrite Books in Atlanta, Georgia on Aug. 18; I plan to attend the National Gay and Lesbian Journalists Conference in Philly on Aug. 25. I have two readings in Boston in Sept. and October.

CC: Finally, many readers of Kenneth's blog are extremely slutty. Which of your novels would you recommend for those looking for a very sexy read during these steamy mid-summer days??
JD: My second novel, "Miami Manhunt," is the sexiest … raunchiest! I don’t know why. I think the heat in Miami acts like a natural aphrodisiac and makes the natives and visitors uber horny. When I wrote the book, I just kept thinking … sex, sex, sex.

Meredith Baxter: 'I Didn't Know I Was a Lesbian' (continued)

After adding Sake to her list of favorite beverages and appearing "dazed" in a television movie, Meredith felt that she just might have a "problem with alcohol." This became a reality when she started to drive to parks during the day and blackout after drinking HUGE amounts of alcohol. Eventually she made her way to Alcoholics Anonymous. Being the completely self obsessed person that came across in this memoir, she felt she was "above" everyone else in her AA meetings. She was wealthy and FAMOUS. The other poor sons of bitches in the meetings surely had a problem because they weren't in the Movie of the Week. Mare didn't want to follow the 12 steps, especially the one which says "take responsibility for the harm you may have caused others." Why would she do that? She's perfect!! Eventually she admits to kind of realizing that she's been a bit selfish and decides to agree to have a sober sponsor. She chose a woman who she suspected David Birney of cheating on her with. Good choice!!

Miss Baxter's first "lesbian revelation" comes when she discusses her conscious choice to dress like a MAN during her custody battle with Birney. She claims the depositions were so "threatening" that she had to butch it up. She wore wing-tip oxfords, blazers, and cut her hair very short. Meredith thinks she should "probe" this issue more as it could be seen as a "foreshadowing" of her eventual coming out. Girl, PLEASE!!! Your choice of attire rarely has any indication on your sexual orientation. Just ask Tyler Perry!! He spends most of his days in a dress and he's COMPLETELY straight.

After butching it up for the court, the perfect "butch woman done wrong" movie of the week made its way to her. "A Woman Scorned, The Betty Broderick Story" was filmed in 1991. Mare LOVED Betty. She could relate to her because Betty was privileged and was treated very badly by her ex-husband. Of course Broderick KILLED her ex and his new wife. No worries, Meredith passes no judgment and completely understands how that could have happened.

She found the role "therapeutic" and enjoyed pretending it was David's house that she drove a car through in one of the scenes!! She also enjoyed punching her co-star Stephen Collins. She states all this violence was "cathartic" for her and allowed her to get in touch with her anger towards David Birney. I hope for his sake, he has a restraining order against her. In fact, let's keep her out of the Walmart firearms section while we are at it!!

The moment I thought I was waiting for came on page 224 when Meredith talks about bringing her friend, Carla to her mother's Malibu home. After a festive July 4th on the beach, Mare and Carla are lying in bed laughing and joking. Suddenly, Meredith KISSES Carla. Soon they were "doughnut to doughnut." Shockingly, Meredith did not feel this made her a lesbian or even bisexual. She was just horny. It was just sex to her. Once again, Meredith was just happy that someone was paying attention to her. Carla developed feelings for Meredith that went beyond "les-be-friends." Meredith was having NONE of that garbage as she still wanted to end up with a man. So she let poor Carla go. Before I could turn the page, she was on to the next MAN, another member of her AA community. I'm joining AA as it seems a great place to get laid outside of prison.

Hubby No. 3: Michael Blodgett, whose life was Beyond the Valley of the Dolls

Meredith became a homewrecker with her next relationship. She met her second husband Michael at AA. Baxter claims she was aware that she was a whoring mistress from the start. Eventually she pressured him to tell his wife. He did and proceeded to kick the wife and his young daughter out of their home. How nice! Meredith said she "felt bad" and gave a few bucks to help them out. Such a thoughtful woman!! Eventually they this marriage fell apart when Michael started to spend Meredith's money like it was water. She also discovered that he had a MASSIVE prescription drug problem. She found him one night with "pills all over his mouth" as he was so out of it, he couldn't get the pills IN his mouth. He was such a pill fiend that he would sleepwalk at night moving his fingers in a way that looked like he was "chasing pills through the air." He obviously had to go, so Meredith sent him to rehab and filed for divorce.

FINALLY on page 255, we get to the juicy stuff. A woman named "Paula" who was 23 years younger than our Mare found her way to her heart and crotch! Paula rented the one bedroom guesthouse that Baxter had on her property. Meredith felt a strange attraction to Paula. She loved to watch her dance and felt warm inside while watching Paula lay out by the swimming pool. They started to bond as friends. Eventually, while Meredith was away on a trip to Florida, she started SEXTING Paula. Oh yes!! Obviously after the SEXTING, Paula knew that Meredith was more than interested. When Meredith returned, Paula attempted to kiss her. Meredith, being the big tease she is, resisted saying "Oh no, I can't." Yeah right! Soon the clothes were on the floor and Meredith was in the midst of a "finger licking good" fun time. Baxter states this relationship helped her to "open her eyes" to her true self. Also, she began to "dance better" after this happened! WINNING! Meredith came out to a few of her children and began the "journey" to self acceptance at age 54. Better late than never, I say.

In true Meredith style, she dumped "Paula" and fell in love with Nancy, her current partner. Nancy is a tough, "lumber hauling" truck driving bull dyke! I think Nancy is reading these posts as pissed off lesbian named "Nancy" has written me some lovely hate mail about my "report." I'd like to say to both Ms. Baxter and Nancy that I hope you have a lifetime of happiness.

Meredith Baxter Comes 'Untied' (continued)

When we last left our girl Meredith Baxter, she was being pandered to various casting agents by her PIMP, I mean manager/stepfather Jack. Finally, her whoring around Hollywood paid off and she was cast in the CBS series "Bridget Loves Bernie." The "Bernie" in this series about a young Irish Catholic elementary schoolteacher (Baxter) who falls in love with a Jewish cab driver, was none other than Mr. David Birney. Meredith states that she was immediately attracted to the "extremely handsome, dark haired, intense, lithe, and graceful" 32-year-old actor. Though his looks were beyond enough for her to lose her panties; the real attraction came from his "confidence," "opinions," and his love of classical music with ability to quote from Shakespeare and Yeats. To me, he sounds like a serious drag. Kind of similar to those "upper crust" queers that go to the opera, spend lots of money at the Human Rights Campaign dinners and frequent the East Side Club for sex with a fellow intellectual homosexual. Basically, Meredith was just happy to have another man pay attention to her. In true Baxter style, she fucked him within less than a week of knowing him!

"Bridget Loves Bernie" made its debut in the fall of 1972 to huge ratings. Along with the big ratings, came BIG controversy. Jewish and Catholic groups both complained and threatened CBS because of the "scandalous" interfaith relationship that was portrayed on camera. Baxter states that CBS received threats to boycott sponsors. As a result, CBS made the series extremely bland and took out many of the jokes that had to do with both religions. Before I go any further, I'd like to announce to all the "212" readers that as a former Catholic, I would very much like to have relations with a Jewish man. I find you all extremely HOT. As the scripts became more mundane each week, Mr. Birney became Mr. Bitchy!! Oh yes, according to Mare, he felt that the dialogue was beneath him and complained more than the character of his Jewish mother. Meredith became fed up with his negativity and said "DAVID, THIS IS NOT MASTERPIECE THEATER! IT'S JUST TELEVISION." Whoops! This was NOT the thing to say as Meredith claims he suddenly and unexpectedly bitch-slapped her to the ground. While on the ground, she did notice his "stylish Florsheim zippered stack-heeled boots." Score one for fashion, Mr. Birney!! Eventually, because of the controversy, the show was canceled. (It was the highest-rated television program ever to be canceled after only one season.)

Meredith continued to date David and do classic television movies like "Cat Creature," the story of a woman who is the "reincarnation of a murderous Egyptian cat-headed priestess." Quality, Meredith. Quality. Apparently, David didn't feel that these were quality productions. Meredith claims that he made fun of her constantly. She had enough and escaped to Palm Springs. Within a few days, David showed up in Palm Springs and Meredith desired his tight, jock body. There was one problem, she FORGOT her diaphragm. Oh well, she fucked him anyway and this time got knocked up! To avoid having a bastard child, she reluctantly agreed to marry David. Hating the idea of marrying him, she invited NO ONE to represent her at the wedding aside from her mother, Whitney, and new stepfather (just for trivia's sake: Meredith claims her mother Whitney "created" the CBS hit "One Day at a Time." Norman Lear loved the idea but hated Whitney resulting in that terrible slut Bonnie Franklin being cast as "Ann Romano.")

No longer a single lady, Meredith claims that David "forced" her to add "Birney" to her last name. He got her to do this by constantly introducing her to people as Meredith "who are you/what's your name?" You know, the same way we address her today, "MEREDITH WHO???" Anyway, she claims he continued to be a complete bastard to her even refusing to "allow" her give birth with a "saddle block." He wanted complete "natural" childbirth. At this point, she should have told him to have the kid out of his asshole. But she didn't.

Shortly after the birth of their daughter, Meredith was cast in the ABC series "Family," which starred future alleged muff muncher Kristy McNichol.

Meredith states that she found acting with McNichol "grueling." She felt that Kristy "gave nothing" in her performance. Well guess what, little Kristy won EMMY AWARDS for her performance, something Meredith cannot claim. During her five years on "Family," Meredith claims that David was unable to find any roles that merited any success. She claims he was "distant" toward their children and often called her a "bimbo." Well, if the shoe fits, girl...

All this crap finally brings us to what she is known for, "Family Ties." Writer-producer Gary David Goldberg and his wife were invited over to the Baxter-Birneys for dinner one evening. Goldberg was considering David for a lead in a series he was creating called "The Bureau." Mare claims that Goldberg found David's behavior toward her "embarrassing" and "mean." He didn't want to work with him in anyway. He DID want to work with Meredith. SCORE! "Family Ties" was originally written to be a one-hour drama. However, NBC thought it could be funny if it was a sitcom about two hippie parents with three conservative children. Our favorite child star, Tina Yothers, was the first to be cast with Meredith signing on shortly after. Meredith claims that David DESPERATELY wanted to be cast as "Steven Keaton." He would send Meredith to meet with Goldberg on a daily basis to ask that the role be offered to him. Goldberg basically said "yeah, whatever" and killed that idea fast. This THRILLED Meredith. She hated her husband and couldn't imagine having to work with and live with him. In lieu of David, Goldberg hired the studly, yet effeminate Michael Gross. Gross was a trained stage actor who had just finished performing in "Bent" (mmm hmmm..I know what you are all thinking). Finishing out the cast were newcomer Justine Bateman and Michael J. Fox. Fox was added last as NBC felt that "no one as short as he could ever be a star." He got the job only after Matthew Broderick turned it down. Meredith writes that she felt the casting was bizarre. She felt no one looked like anyone else and that people wouldn't believe they were actually related. Hey, it's FICTION, calm down.

As most of us know, unless you are lucky enough to be too young to remember, Fox's character of "Alex P. Keaton" took off. This disturbed Meredith. She bitches in the book that although he was "comedy gold," SHE was promised the lead role. By the second season, Baxter's character "Elyse" was given supporting role status. Scripts were focused on Fox and the other kids. To this day, Meredith is hurt that no one at NBC apologized for her being upstaged or explained to her why this was happening. Clue: IT'S A BUSINESS. Fox brought in the ratings, you didn't. Perhaps this is why she decided to start DRINKING on the set everyday.

Realizing that taking LSD and thinking you are being chased by the Smurfs on a set isn't a good career move; Meredith turned to the bottle. Miss Baxter, 'cause she's nasty, kept a tumbler of white wine with her at all times on set. At first, there wasn't much of a problem. She was just giddy and having fun with Michael Gross who was quite the practical joker. Mr. Gross and Baxter often played practical jokes on each other during taping. During one particular fun time, both decided to throw chocolate pudding at each other. How cute! They ruined the set and pissed off the craft services caterers. Other fun times included Meredith putting popcorn in her nostrils and blowing them out. Yes, kids, this is the SHIT she writes about. Eventually, Gary David Goldberg got tired of her antics and banned drinking from the set. Meredith didn't care, she put a tumbler of white wine in the nursery that was built to accommodate her newborn twins! Meredith began to become sloppy. After a performance in a play, Baxter got wasted and woke up the next morning in a cul-de-sac with her feet in the gutter.

According to Mare, David continued to be abusive throughout the run of "Family Ties." "Forcing" her to get pregnant again, calling her show a "piece of shit," ignoring the children and slapping her around were common themes in her life with him. She learned to how to "make him cum" quick so that she didn't have to endure sex with him (we all know that means she put her finger in his ass while blowing him...). Eventually, she found her inner strength and said "don't hit me ever again." Magically, it worked. He stopped. However, after 15 years of marriage she was done. She filed for divorce after "Ties" ended. Like any woman scorned, she cut up his clothes and threw them out. She then started to try and seduce married men. Like a pro, she was a success at fucking a few. What a whore!

I think it's important to note that David Birney ADAMANTLY DENIES the abuse allegations. He recently spoke to People magazine (did Howard Bragman get him that story?) and stated her claims are "an appalling abuse of the truth." He calls this memoir "a kind of fairy tale." In addition he states that she made the divorce ugly by claiming the children had "repressed memories of abuse" in court testimony. He states this was her attempt to conduct a "relentless and brutal assault for eight years" to get sole custody of their three children. All custody suits were dismissed by the court on each occasion.

I have read 210 pages of a 290 page book. So far, I have read NOTHING about her having ANY feelings of attraction to other women. If I don't get some "Stanley Steamer Carpet Cleaner" action in the final 80 pages; I will throw this book at Miss Baxter the next time she comes to my town in a dinner theater production.

It gives me great pleasure to present to you my book report on yet ANOTHER has-been celebrity who has decided to come out of the closet and sell books. So sit back, relax, and enjoy this "snarcastic" journey through Meredith Baxter's memoir, "Untied."

Before you get excited, "Untied" is NOT about Meredith's experience with lesbian bondage play. One could only wish it was that interesting. In fact, this first part of the "report" has NOTHING to do with her being a lesbian (aside from the opening where she having a flashback to her coming out on National Television.) I'm about 1/3rd through the book and so far, no wet naps were needed as a result of her addiction to cunnilingus. So let's begin:

Meredith begins her book by assuring us all that she has "told the truth as best" as she can recall "up to a point..." This means, that the manuscript was deemed BORING as hell by the publisher and they added a bunch of fake shit to make it readable. Thanks for the heads-up, Meredith. I think it should be on the cover as a warning.

In her Prologue, Ms. Baxter takes us to the night before she announced to the world that she had decided to become a lesbian. She finds herself sitting in a bathtub at the Four Seasons in Midtown (which she should be happy about because after 20 years of doing nothing but crap Lifetime Movies, she should be staying at the Holiday Inn Express!) While lathering her body with soap, bubbles and her partner Nancy's tongue, she is having a "meltdown." Would she be perceived as making a pathetic career move? Would she look desperate for attention? Would she be doing this to get out of her job on a WEB SERIES? I say, HELL YES!

Ironically, it was the web series that brought her to this point. All three of the viewers of the series started to ask questions when Meredith began to film on a LESBIAN CRUISE called "Sweet." Mare brought her partner of four years with her on the cruise, which left many lesbians in attendance curious about the "meow mix" that seemed to be going on between the two women. This information made it to the National Enquirer. To avoid a "salacious" coming-out story, she did what every person in need of attention does. She called Howard Bragman, the QUEEN of helping celebrities deal with their scandals, arrests, and coming out extravaganzas! Being the great publicist he is, Howard immediately booked her on the "Today" show and got her a spread ( no pun intended) in "People" magazine. Come to think of it, Bragman does this with ALL his clients who are coming out. Everyone gets on the "Today" show and appears on the cover of "People." Maybe he isn't that great after all. I could do that job...but I digress. Meredith didn't want to do these things. She wanted to take out an ad in the paper that said she was a lesbian. Howard must have realized that it would only be printed in the escort services section of the paper and persuaded her to agree. Next we find Meredith sitting opposite Matt Lauer and announcing to the world that she is in fact as lesbian. She described her "discovery" to the Land of Lesbos, "very late in life."

Because of that one moment in time, this book was made possible. I mean, WHO would want to read about Meredith Baxter if she wasn't a lesbian? I wouldn't. She knows it, which is why she tortured me with the next 100 pages of drivel from her childhood. To save you the HELL of having to read it, I will just go over a few parts that are somewhat juicy and interesting. If you find this boring, fuck you. I read this shit so you don't have to.

Whitney Blake with Shirley Booth and Don DeFore

Meredith was raised by a cold-hearted bitch of a mother who wanted nothing to do with her children. Meredith and her two older brothers were forced to call their mother by her stage name, "Whitney." Whitney Blake was a struggling actress who had kicked out Meredith's father when the children were very little. Whitney's only desire was to be a star. Like any slut trying to make it in Hollywood, Whitney slept with many, many men! Eventually, she wrapped her legs around Hollywood agent Jack Fields. They married and Meredith and her siblings moved with their mother out of their white trash digs into a nice Hollywood Hills Home (like any respectable human being.) With Jack's help, Whitney began to get roles in local theater. After dying her brown hair platinum blond and getting a nose job (like any serious actress,) she started to get bit roles on popular TV dramas. Her big break came when she was cast as a regular on the Shirley Booth vehicle "Hazel." Her part was crappy and Whitney constantly blamed Jack for destroying her career with getting her the part. Her dismay at her lack of good acting roles didn't stop her from enjoying the good life. Whitney enjoyed terrorizing her Guatemalan housekeeper by constantly ringing the bell for the poor woman to "meet her every need" (read into that what you will.) Meredith's mother continued to ignore her children. She was like Joan Crawford without the stardom and wire hangers. One day, poor Meredith got her first menstruation while swimming in the pool. She went to her mother who told her "tell Jack." Mare was devastated that she had to tell her stepfather to go and buy her Kotex!

Jack not only bought Meredith Kotex. He bought her sexy bathing suits that showed off her HUGE bosom. He also enjoyed being extremely inappropriate with her by trying to force his tongue down her throat on a few occasions. By this time, Meredith was a student at Hollywood High. LSD became Mare's favorite subject. She LOVED to trip on acid. While tripping on acid, she got her first role in a production at the school. Meredith decided that she wanted to become a classically trained singer. It didn't matter that she had as she said "little" talent in the singing department. Her stepfather was able to get her a space in the Interlochen Center For The Arts. Meredith was quite out of place here as she had no clue what classical music was. She was a joke to the other students who could sight read classical masterpieces in Latin! Because of her despair, Meredith did what most music students do when they need attention, they commit a half-assed suicide attempt. Miss Baxter snuck into the dorm when all the other students were at a mandatory campus concert, and stole Midol, asthma medication, and cold tablets from her dorm mates. She took them all in one gulp. Nothing happened to her, except for a little vomiting. However, she was kicked out of the school (most likely because she had no singing talent and stole everyone's drugs!)

Meredith finished high school and continued to trip on acid on a daily basis. She met a man named Bob, fucked him hard, and moved in with him. Our girl was so serious about her drugs, she'd do anything to get high. One time she decided to "smoke" a banana peel as she heard it was "mellow yellow." To her dismay, it did nothing and she wasted a good banana! One thing that did work for her was the swallowing the propylhexedrine saturated cotton balls of a Vicks "vapo inhaler." DELICIOUS!! It was cheap and gave her one hell of a speedy high!! Girlfriend was a drug fiend and would show up to her job tripping on acid. Because she was running from imaginary cartoon characters while at her job as a bookkeeper, she was fired. She did other odd jobs until once again, her use of LSD got her into trouble over and over again. Eventually, Bob knocked her up and they got married. They ended up having two children together, surviving on Bob's crappy paycheck from Ralph's Supermarket. After moving to Canada for a brief period of time to try "farming," then back to California where she sold Tupperware, she decided it was time to dump Bob's poor ass. It was time because he found her empty diaphragm case. Oh yes, she was fucking other guys and was using the diaphragm that very moment!

Though she claims she disliked her stepfather, she had no problem calling Jack to help her get roles in television. She even put up with him fondling her, anything for that role in Hollywood! Jack became her "agent" and sent her to various "auditions," which were more like casting couch appointments. Though Meredith claims she didn't want Jack to "pimp for her," she NEVER told him to stop. Eventually the whoring got her a role on the television show "The Interns."

Her role in "The Interns" got her an audition to be in a pilot called "Young Love," which was a spin-off of the "Doris Day Show." Though the pilot wasn't picked up, she got to work with Miss Day who as Meredith says was "orange." Miss Day's best days were behind her as she was now over 50. To keep her "looking fresh," Doris decided she should be as tan as possible. Using terracotta hued make-up, Doris made a modern day John Boehner look "Anderson Cooper pale." After the pilot failed, Meredith continued to be whorish and got roles as a guest star on various television shows. Eventually she was cast in the film "Ben" and became a popular choice for roles that needed a "hippie type." All that LSD use had finally come to good use! Meredith's life was about to change for the big time when she was offered a lead role in the new sitcom "Bridget Loves Bernie." Here she would meet her future husband David Birney.

I just got back from the emergency room. No worries, I’ll be ok. I just had to have treatment for TOXIC SHOCK after watching the tribute to Lady GaGa’s twat, also known as her video to her hit song “Born This Way.” Yes, I know that I’m about to be hated by a gaggle of gay men in their 20’s (along with aging queens) who think this woman shits gold. I believe they are called her “little fuckers” or something like that. I don’t understand you, just as I don’t understand the fascination with “The Black Spark” and his “spark plugs,” but I digress. Yes, she is a very talented musician with a great set of pipes. But, bitch please, she has lost her damn mind!

Thinking the video would be a “tribute” to the LGBT community, I sat down to watch the nearly seven and a half minute clip. Things started out nicely, with a lovely pink triangle that had a unicorn in the middle. I smiled, knowing she was paying tribute to all of us including the often left out trannies who, like the unicorn, are rare and wondrous with a touch of ancient magic and kinship of the gods! Immediately after, I was transported into a world that frankly I didn’t want to be in.

GaGa appears on the screen announcing that this is “The Manifesto of Mother Monster.” She takes us into the world of “G.O.A.T.” (a government owned alien territory) in outer space (that looks like the birth canal complete with fallopian tubes and ovaries.) What follows next can only be described as my worst nightmare.

As the mother of G.O.A.T, the infinite “births” of the good race, a race without any judgments or prejudices comes directly out of GaGa’s pussy! We see GaGa in stirrups and watch as space age lesbians fist her and bring out newly born whatever the hell they are to populate her dream world. But alas, all is not good in GaGa’s twat. Just as Mother GaGa was giving birth to all the good creatures, an evil look alike GaGa was also in the stirrups. This evil incarnation reached into her bearded oyster and pulled out a HUGE assault weapon that was so big it split her in two! I know some of you have had the same experience in your personal lives. Now that good and evil both occupy her world, the choice begins. Can we be good, or will we succumb to the evil that just fell out of her cat flaps?

Around the 2:30 mark, the song begins. Dancers in the “fallopian tube position” slowly wake as a nearly naked GaGa scampers around bringing them into her battle for good. As everyone dances to the beat, the “good mother” looks on with pride (while still being in the stirrups.) An interpretive dance inspires the mother of all things good to push out more positive, loving, and non judgmental beings out of her very worn out panty hamster. An orgy of flesh on flesh finishes out the song as everyone falls all over each other in lustful celebration.

I will give GaGa the courtesy to say that the only Madonna inspired incident was at the 6:53 mark when a gap toothed, bad cheek implant looking GaGa appears as the “evil mother” crying that she lost the war. Is this GaGa’s way of telling Madonna that she’s old and over for good? If so, let the war begin!

I saw more vagina in this video than I have seen in my entire life. I found the bitch's “g” spot. As a result, I needed to be debriefed immediately after the viewing by a trained professional. My only hope is that she got a pap smear while in the stirrups during the shoot. Time management is important for a pop star. Let’s hope she made the best of it!

Before you start making mean comments about me and try to kill me with your bullshit “emo” antics; I bought the song on iTunes. I like her, just not enough to have to look at her mud flaps for 7 and a half minutes.

Dear David,

I wanted to take a moment to speak to the inaccuracies of your story and to the strength of The Advocate brand.

Clearly, 2009 has been one of the most challenging economic periods for all businesses in the United States. Moving strong, lean businesses forward in 2010 requires that business models adapt. This company cares very much about the history of the most important LGBT national news brand and is making careful and thoughtful decisions to ensure its survival and to position it for growth. We are reorganizing departments to make that happen. That said, we are all very grateful for the work our departing staff members contributed‹just as we are of those who continue to work with the company.

First, The Advocate staff has not been "gutted" as you write. We are, however, making strategic and sometimes difficult staff changes in order to support all iterations of The Advocate brand. The print expression (which will vary in size from month to month as it always has), will continue on its monthly schedule. Our website (which has quadrupled its traffic in the past 16 months) will be relaunched early next year with enhanced technology that will add dimension to the breaking news and features stories our editors and reporters are already delivering on a several-times-a-day basis.

So what does that mean for The Advocate reader? We'll still ask tough questions of the White House press secretary around issues like DADT, we'll still deliver online live video coverage of key events like today's passage of the Ryan White Care Act, and we'll report critical news around topics like the Defense of Marriage Act -- only now you'll get more of it (in a more timely manner) than ever before.

The Advocate brand will also expand, as previously announced, to include a monthly hour-long television magazine that will be broadcast on our sister brands here! TV and Gay.com and of course on Advocate.com. We are currently in production, and on schedule, for the show's February launch. Modeled after CBS's tremendously esteemed 60 Minutes, this program will explore the critical issues of the day through the Advocate lens.

All Advocate subscribers will continue to receive their print editions of the magazine, and editor in chief Jon Barrett (who is still employed with the company despite an earlier Queerty report that he had been fired) has been promoted to Advocate editorial director overseeing all expressions of extensions of the brand.

With regard to HIV Plus magazine, it will continue to be published under the leadership of editor in chief Michael Edwards. In fact, while Queerty was propagating this inaccurate story, our staff was working closely with AIDS Project Los Angeles in preparation for a fundraiser for the group (in conjunction with HIV Plus) at the home of our CEO Paul Colichman.

Speaking of Mr. Colichman and our chairman, Stephen Jarchow. These two men have invested a great deal of time, energy, and resources not only into building a vibrant, collaborative workplace but into rebuilding, sustaining, and growing some of our community's most important brands. Mr. Jarchow has passed on his commitment to the LGBT community to his lesbian daughter, Boo, who in addition to working at The Advocate and on Shewired.com, was an instrumental young leader in organizing last month's March on Washington. I hope other young people follow her good example as we all need to part of the solution for LGBT equality. One final note on your personal attacks: Mr. Colichman takes great umbrage to the characterization that he prances around the office; he pictures himself much more as an optimistic skipper. We have that from "multiple sources."

Here Media continues to evolve and integrate its many properties with care and respect in challenging times. In fact, The Advocate -- throughout its four decades of service -- is a great model when it comes to embracing change. It began in 1967 as a mimeographed newsletter, evolved into a broadsheet newspaper, transitioned into a tabloid, and then blossomed in its current glossy iteration. The Advocate will continue to grow -- especially online and on air -- while maintaining its high standards in print.

On Wednesday, thousands of Advocate readers went to Advocate.com to watch live video coverage of long-overdue passage of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. No other news site in the world thought the moment was important enough to cover live, but The Advocate did -- and the Advocate will continue to do so.
